Our Environmental Commitments:

GreenDeck prioritizes green stormwater infrastructure, watershed protection, ecological restoration, rainwater management, native landscapes, climate adaptation, renewable energy, and community stewardship.

We seek to prevent environmental harm before relying on mitigation. When designing projects, we favor nature-based, low-impact, durable solutions that work with existing ecological systems. We support green businesses and not big-box stores or corporations that deprioritize environmental stewardship or support policies misaligned with eco-friendly values and ethics.

Water Stewardship

Water is central to GreenDeck's work.

We support practices that:

  • reduce polluted stormwater runoff;

  • slow, capture, infiltrate, filter, and reuse rainwater;

  • protect streams, wetlands, shorelines, and groundwater;

  • reduce erosion and flooding;

  • restore natural drainage functions;

  • improve watershed health; and

  • reduce unnecessary potable-water use.

Where appropriate, GreenDeck incorporates rain gardens, bioretention, cisterns, bioswales, permeable surfaces, rainwater harvesting, soil restoration, and related green infrastructure.

Land and Habitat

GreenDeck seeks to improve the ecological condition of the land we work on.

Projects should consider:

  • soil health;

  • native vegetation;

  • invasive-species management;

  • tree canopy;

  • pollinator and wildlife habitat;

  • erosion;

  • ecological connectivity;

  • existing hydrology; and

  • long-term maintenance.

We prioritize restoration over unnecessary disturbance and reuse existing materials and infrastructure where feasible.

Materials and Waste

GreenDeck strives to reduce the environmental footprint of construction, maintenance, and stewardship activities.

Whenever practical, we prioritize:

  • durable and repairable materials;

  • reused and recycled materials;

  • responsibly sourced products;

  • low-toxicity materials;

  • locally sourced materials;

  • waste reduction;

  • material recovery; and

  • designs that minimize future replacement.

Products with unnecessary toxic chemicals, persistent pollutants, or significant ecological impacts are never used, especially when standard viable alternatives exist.

Energy and Climate

GreenDeck supports electrification, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and low-carbon project delivery. Where appropriate, projects may incorporate solar power, efficient pumps, lighting, environmental monitoring systems, batteries, or other distributed clean-energy technologies. Consider climate adaptation and resilience alongside greenhouse-gas reduction.

Environmental Justice

Environmental sustainability and environmental justice are inseparable. GreenDeck prioritizes communities disproportionately affected by pollution, flooding, infrastructure burdens, heat, environmental degradation, and historic underinvestment. Community members should have meaningful opportunities to participate in project decisions and, whenever possible, benefit through paid employment, training, contracting, education, or stewardship opportunities.

Workforce Development

GreenDeck supports the development of a skilled environmental workforce. Our projects should create opportunities for young adults, frontline-community members, contractors, students, and emerging environmental professionals to gain practical experience in:

  • green stormwater infrastructure;

  • watershed stewardship;

  • ecological restoration;

  • landscape maintenance;

  • environmental monitoring;

  • climate resilience; and

  • sustainable project management.

Responsible Partnerships

GreenDeck works collaboratively with communities, public agencies, tribes, utilities, nonprofits, educational institutions, contractors, scientists, engineers, landscape professionals, and landowners. Partnerships should respect environmental regulations, community priorities, scientific evidence, cultural knowledge, and long-term stewardship responsibilities.

Measurement and Accountability

GreenDeck seeks to measure environmental outcomes whenever feasible.

Relevant indicators may include:

  • gallons of stormwater captured or treated;

  • square footage of impervious surface managed;

  • acreage restored;

  • native plants and trees installed;

  • habitat improved;

  • pollutants reduced;

  • water conserved;

  • renewable energy generated;

  • people trained;

  • paid stewardship hours created; and

  • community members engaged.

We will communicate accomplishments accurately and avoid unsupported environmental claims or greenwashing.

Continuous Improvement

Sustainability is an evolving practice. GreenDeck will continue reviewing new scientific research, technologies, environmental regulations, community knowledge, and field experience to improve the environmental performance of our work.

Our guiding standard is simple:

Leave the land, water, and community measurably better than we found them.

GreenDeck Climate Commons Environmental & Sustainability Policy

GreenDeck Climate Commons is committed to protecting and restoring the natural systems that sustain communities across the Puget Sound region.

Our work is grounded in the belief that environmental stewardship should produce measurable improvements to land, water, habitat, climate resilience, and community well-being.

“Communication was top-notch and the final outcome was even better than we imagined. A great experience all around.”
